Deck of Cards

April 22, 2024

Our final day on the W. Our biggest day too, as we were doing the Speedy Gonzales version over four days, not the typical five. Unlike most people, we had to get up to the glacier (12kms away) and back before our departing ferry.

So we smashed through breakfast and took off full steam ahead. One saving grace was we were able to leave our bags in a locker at the base... I even chose to leave my camera as my back needed a rest. It already felt bruised and battered! *Great decision*

The hike up wasn't the hardest, and we made excellent time, constantly checking to see when we'd have to turn around. We got to the top where most other people hang out for the day, stay the night, then return the following day to complete the W. Not us! We pushed on, checked out the impressive Gray Glacier, and seemed to think that we were okay for time... so what did we do? Hike some more. You can get closer, you see.

Up, now into a section of the O route, in search of a couple of famous suspension bridges. A few extra kilometers to add to the already giant day. Why not! Before wobbling over the first bridge, we dropped our bag to the side and quickly pushed once more, time not on our side anymore. Would we make it? Would it be worth it? We did (just!) and were definitely rewarded with a magnificent view of the Glacier below. The bridge itself was, let's just say, not for the faint of heart. Jelly legs kicked in, over and back, it had to be done!

So we hiked the initial 12kms to the refugio, then tacked on at least 4kms to the bridges. And this was only our morning. We’d now turn around and complete it all over again. Now with our departing boat as a deadline. Run!

Coach Ana was on a mission and was determined to make up some time. Vamos!! Bounding down the trail like a pair of Patagonian Pumas, we’d pound down the protected path, scampering over rocks and speeding through gullies to propel us up the other side. Somehow after 4 days of pounding the paths, stretching the legs like this felt rather nice, but this feeling wouldn’t last for too long lol. After a few kilometres, we were happy; our time schedule for the exit was back on track.

The afternoon comprised of many, many steps. The same as the morning, just now feeling more weary. Each rocky step would exude pain, but it was one less than the last. Our longest day of the trek, our last day of the trek so all was good. We’d reach our destination with only minutes to spare, just enough time to relish what we’d achieved, collect our belongings and plop down with a cold one in hand in the queue for the ferry out of Paine Grande. Buggered yet buzzing!

What a magical few days it has been; Torres del Paine National Park is epic, and I’d love to return. Like a complete deck of cards, it has had everything. Hearts; the most insane, jaw-dropping scenery you’ll ever come across. Wind-swept peaks of angered beauty, majestic glacial lakes, and lush sub-alpine forests. Flora and fauna which held mystery close to their chest, some easy to spot, others extremely challenging… but they’re there. Diamonds; the weather, it couldn’t have been better. We lucked out, feeling extremely fortunate to have fresh snow on our opening day, a set of four spectacular sunrises, calm unPatagonian winds, clear days, and mild temperatures. It doesn’t get any better than this! Spades; spoons, knives, and forks represent the food, drinks, and accommodation we shared along the journey. Each refugio we stayed at fueled our bodies with substance and warmth, allowing us to continue each day… and very tasty too! And finally Clubs; our trekking mates. It has been a pleasure getting to know you these past few days, sharing stories of wonder and excitement. What an experience it has been, and I’m so glad I got to share it with you all!
