Iguaçu // Iguazú

March 26, 2024

A joke between Ana and me has been the concept of a "waterless waterfall," stemming from a trip to Mt. Wilson during a drought when there wasn't much water flowing. So, when we visited Iguazu Falls together, it was a breathtaking experience. Unlike our previous fall, Iguazu Falls was a spectacle of cascading water, with swimming pools of water tipping over every second—a force to be reckoned with!

We landed on an early morning flight from BA, courtesy of BondiAir of all things. Our accommodation in Puerto Iguazu helped us arrange for a friend of theirs to drive us across the border into Brazil (thankfully, being in a taxi allowed us to skip the immigration queue.

Before entering the park, we explored a bird and butterfly sanctuary, marveling at the local fauna. The highlight was a hummingbird that hovered right before our eyes, seemingly unnoticed by the passing crowds. This encounter set the tone for the incredible experiences we would have in the coming days. Later in the afternoon, we spotted a dozen wild toucans playing in the trees and watched giant rodent Capybaras and their adorable pups quietly basking on the riverbanks.

Oh, and the falls themselves were simply stunning, exuding powerful beauty. From the Brazil side, we enjoyed a panoramic view and felt the immense force of the falls at their base. A tropical downpour even added to the magic while we were there, emphasizing Mother Nature's raw beauty. On the Argentine side, we wandered along numerous trails, offering different perspectives of the falls—each view felt like a scene from Lord of the Rings or Avatar. Unfortunately, we couldn't view "The Devil's Throat" from up close as the track/platform was under repairs (due to being washed downstream) but it only added to the mysterious allure of the place.

One of the highlights was taking a speed boat to the falls, a different experience from the Lady of the Mist at Niagara. After navigating through rapids, we were driven underneath one of Iguazu's smaller falls. The spray alone soaked us through, leaving me amazed that my phone still works after that drenching. What an incredible adventure!
